Both teams got good play from their quarter backs, who each used both their arm and legs to move the ball. However, in the end, Kent still has struggled to find a way to win. In overtime, a low snap on a 2 point conversion attempt ended Kent’s hopes. The Zips won the 2018 Wagon Wheel trophy by a score of 24-23.

Woody Barrett threw for 188 yards and one touchdown. He ran for another 81 and score. His 269 yards accounted for 73% of the Kent offense. On the other side, Kato Nelson ran for 90 and a score and threw for 219 and a score with both his legs and his feet. His 309 yards were 85% of the Akron total.

The defense also had their stars for each team, as Cepeda Phillips finished with 12 tackles, and 2 for a loss. The Zips got 13 tackles from John Lako. Jamal Davis II had 9, along with a pass defensed. 2 of those tackles were for a loss. Of course Ulysees Gilbert III had a good game with 8 tackles, three of those for a loss.

The Zips move to 3-3 on the season, and that missed opportunity against the Cornhuskers, who managed to win their first game on the season today, loom large with regards to bowl eligibility.

The Zips still only have 1 win on the season, but have shown time and again they have learned to play better football, they just haven’t learned how to turn that into more wins.
