The 2019 Mid-American Conference Championship Game between the Central Michigan Chippewas (8-4, 6-2 MAC) and the Miami RedHawks (7-5, 6-2 MAC) is set to kick off on Saturday, Dec. 2, at noon EST.
The game features two teams who weren’t quite expected to be here when the preseason polls came out.
Miami was selected to finish second in the division, with the Ohio Bobcats selected as the unanimous pick to win the MAC East. The RedHawks didn’t get any votes in the preseason poll for the MAC Championship either, with Ohio being the only East team selected to win it all. They clinched the division two weeks early, thanks to having a win in hand over Buffalo, who lost a game to Kent State via walk-off field goal back in mid-November.
CMU is in the MAC Championship Game after being selected in the preseason poll to finish last in the MAC West division by a considerable margin following a 1-11 campaign in 2018. They exceeded all expectations, clinching a trip to Detroit with a 49-7 win vs. Toledo. The Chips received one vote to win the West and one to win the title: from the late Don Chiodo, the voice of CMU sports.
