Tie game, top of the ninth, in steps David Cole. He shows bunt in the first few pitches he sees, but gets the sign to swing away. That decision was one of the biggest of the night, as Cole knocked in Zach Gilles to give the Central Michigan Chippewas a 6-5 victory over the Miami-Florida Hurricanes. Central Michigan will face off against Mississpi State in the 1-0 game of the regionals.
CMU threatened early in the game, as the Chippewas had the bases loaded in the top of the third inning, but failed to score. Miami was able to score four runs in the bottom of the third inning off Pat Leatherman on a solo home run from Gabe Rivera and a three-run shot from Adrian Del Castillo. Castillo added another home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Garrett Navarra got the Chippewas on the board in the top of the fourth inning, as he hit an RBI-triple in the right center gap to cut the Miami lead to 4-1.
With the Chippewas down just two, 4-2, Evan Kratt came up with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning and drove in three runs with a double to give the Chippewas their first lead of the regional. Miami tied the game on the solo home run from Del Castillo, but Cole answered for the Chips in the top of the ninth to propel CMU to the first round victory over the Hurricanes.
Zach Heeke finished two for three out of the lead off spot for Central Michigan. Zavier Warren added two hits, two walks and a run, while Cole finished two for four with an RBI and a run scored.
Central Michigan will face off against Mississippi State at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 1st. Miami will face off against Southern University at 1 p.m.
