Saturday’s game between Kent State and Miami (OH) in Oxford, OH, has been canceled due to COVID-19 related issues within the Golden Flashes’ program.

The Mid-American Conference released an official statement regarding the cancelation, and the game has been ruled a no contest:

“The Kent State University at Miami University football game on Saturday, December 5 has been canceled due to roster issues with the Kent State football team related to positive COVID-19 tests and subsequent contact tracing. The game has been declared a no contest.”

In the MAC’s abbreviated 2020 schedule, this is the second COVID-related cancelation to transpire. The other cancelation was the rivalry game between Miami and Ohio on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Despite no reported COVID issues within the RedHawks’ program this season, Miami has been forced to cancel two of its six scheduled games. The RedHawks (2-1) have one remaining game on the schedule against Bowling Green on Dec. 12.

This will be Kent State’s first cancelation of the season. The Golden Flashes (3-1) conclude their regular season on Dec. 12 by playing host to Ohio. With the sudden influx of bowl cancelations, the amount of postseason slots available for the RedHawks and Golden Flashes is scarce.

Miami, the 2019 MAC champion, is officially eliminated from the MAC Championship Game. Buffalo clinches the MAC East with a victory over Ohio this weekend. If Ohio happens to win that game, the Bobcats control their own destiny and clinch with a victory over Kent State on Dec. 12. Kent State is still technically alive, although it will need help in the form of Buffalo losses to Ohio and Akron combined with a season-ending win over Ohio.

Five of six games in the MAC remain slated for this Saturday.
