Dillon Serna has really risen through the ranks at Colorado in the past couple years. He only played one game in 2013, his first season in MLS, for the Rapids before becoming a regular fixture in 2014.
Serna played in 27 games last season, starting 18 of those matches. But he has had to be very patient at Colorado this season. Friday marked only his second start of the season and he capitalized on his opportunity, rescuing a point against FC Dallas in a 1-1 draw at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
The goal wasn't spectacular -- certainly not like this golazo he scored against D.C. United -- but it did grab a point for the Rapids, who are toiling at the bottom of the Western Conference.
They have also drawn more games than any team in the league this season while also possessing the least wins, so any semi-positive result could be thought of as progress for Colorado. But if the Rapids want to really challenge anyone, in either conference, they will need to inject a little more energy into their attack and Serna might just be the perfect solution.
Last week's Hustler: Blair Gavin was on the scoresheet again this week, as he scored in a 3-2 loss to Whitecaps FC 2 at UBC Thunderbird Stadium. After going down 2-0 in the second half, Timbers 2 were in desperate need of a goal and Gavin provided it for them with a nice left-footed shot to the near post.
Gavin has scored in two-straight matches now and will look to do so again when Timbers 2 takes on bitter rivals Sounders 2 on Monday, June 29.
