Four games in the MAC on Wednesday night

We are still in the heat of non-conference play, which means teams are traveling all over the country. The MAC is in full swing on Wednesday night as Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, and Toledo are all throwing down at the same time.

UMKC (4-8) vs Central Michigan (8-2) - 7:00 PM

Central Michigan is off to a great start in 2018 with eight wins in 10 games. The Chippewas offense has been rolling and that is thanks to senior guard Larry Austin Jr. who is averaging 19.6 points per game. Central Michigan has scored over 80 points in 4 out of their last 5 contests. Meanwhile, UMKC has been struggling in all aspects, as they find themselves almost all the way at the bottom of the WAC just 12 games in. Their offensive production has been quite terrible as they have managed just 70 points per game thus far. Their sole bright spot has been their junior standout Xavier Bishop, who is averaging 16.8 points and 4.6 assists per game. UMKC is 4-2 in their last six games, so they carry a little bit of momentum into this matchup.

Both of these teams are sitting at .500 and both have equally been struggling. Western Michigan has dropped three out of their last five games, while Dayton has won just once in their last five contests. Dayton has faced some pretty stout competition recently, losing to Oklahoma, Mississippi State, and Auburn. Meanwhile, Western Michigan has fallen to Nicholls, South Carolina Upstate, and #5 Michigan. Broncos center Seth Dugan is averaging 16.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per game but has scored just a total of 14 points in their last two matchups. Western Michigan has been bad on the defensive side of the ball allowing 72.3 points per game, which top scorer for Dayton, forward Josh Cunningham, will be able to exploit in this matchup.

UC Irvine (10-2) vs Eastern Michigan (5-5) - 7:00 PM

These two teams matchup fairly well in this matchup. Both Eastern Michigan and UC Irvine average 71.7 points per game and both rebound the ball at about the same rate. The key in this game for both squads will be defense. Eastern Michigan have one of the best rebounders in college basketball with senior James Thompson IV under the rim. Thompson IV is averaging 9.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, and he has a knack for blocking basketballs at a high-level. UC Irvine is led by their junior guard Max Hazzard, averaging 10.4 points per game. Hazzard had an incredible performance in their last game out, scoring 32 points in just 21 minutes. Not to mention, he shot 10-for-17 from beyond the arc.

The Toledo Rockets have not really been tested so far this season. Their sole loss is coming from Wright State back in November, other than that it has been smooth sailing. The Big Red have struggled thus far, especially recently as they have dropped five of their last seven games. Cornell’s biggest struggles have been offense and rebounding. The Big Red’s scoring production comes from their senior leader Matt Morgan. The North Carolina native is averaging a whopping 23.7 points per game and has failed to score over 20 points just twice in nine games. The Rockets have plenty of scoring outlets, as they are scoring 83.1 points per game as a team. If Toledo can shut Morgan down, they should be able to win this game with ease.

Bulls try to stay undefeated against tough ACC opponent

The #14 ranked Buffalo Bulls (10-0) will waltz into the Carrier Dome with their untarnished record to take on the Syracuse Orange (7-3). The Bulls have certainly impressed people in 2018 thus far. Buffalo shocked the nation by taking down West Virginia earlier in the year, and since then have been able to take down their opponents with ease. The Orange have played well, beating the likes of Ohio State and Georgetown, to name a few. However, they have fallen at the hands of Connecticut, Oregon, and most recently Old Dominion. This will really be Buffalo’s first tough task since beating West Virginia in November.

Buffalo Bulls

The most impressive thing about the Bulls this season has been their offensive consistency. This stellar offensive attack has been led by senior guard CJ Massinburg. As a whole, the Bulls are averaging 85.2 points per game, and Massinburg is accounting for 17.2 of those points. This is not all that surprising as the Bulls averaged 84.6 points per game just a season ago. However, head coach Nate Oats was determined to fix the Bulls defense in the offseason. Buffalo allowed 76.2 points per game last season, meanwhile, in 2018 they are allowing just 67.4 points per game. Buffalo has held opponents to under 65 points in five out of their 10 games this season.

Players To Watch

CJ Massinburg SR - G - 6-3: Massinburg is the key for the Buffalo Bulls to have success against Power Five schools. Massinburg is a prolific scorer and can rebound the ball extremely well for a guard at his height. The Texas native scored 43 points against West Virginia, while also corralling 14 boards and making nine triples.

Nick Perkins SR - F - 6-8: Perkins has been just as crucial as Massinburg in 2018 but in a different light. This 250 pound forward is the key rebounder for the Bulls. Perkins is averaging 8.2 rebounds per game, while also contributing on the offensive end with 13.8 points per game. Perkins will be going up against Oshae Brissett, Syracuse’s top rebounder, in this game. With a size and experience advantage, Perkins should be able to exploit this matchup.

Syracuse Orange

The Orange have had an inconsistent start to 2018. Not in a bad way, however, they have losses to Old Dominion and Connecticut, and a narrow victory over Georgetown. One thing Syracuse has done a good job of this season is defense. The Orange possess a Top 30 defense in the NCAA, by allowing just 62.8 points per game. However, it has been on the other side of the ball where they have struggled. Syracuse has scored over 75 points just twice this season, and those two games were against Morehead State and Colgate. If the Syracuse offense cannot produce a big game, it will be a tough task to hold Buffalo under 75 points.

Players To Watch

Tyus Battle JR - G - 6-6: Battle has been the offensive life line for this Syracuse team. The junior guard is averaging 18.5 points per game and has scored over 22 points in three of his last four contests. Battle can score from just about anywhere and has surprisingly good ball skills for his size.

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Frank Howard SR - G - 6-5: Syracuse has Oshae Brissett and Elijah Hughes who both average around 14 points per game, but their production relies on their ball moving guard, Frank Howard. The senior leader of this team missed the first four games of the season, and the Orange clearly missed him as they lost two games in that four-game stretch. Howard is a great passer and adds a whole other element on the defensive end for Syracuse.

Prediction

This will be one of the toughest defenses Buffalo has had to face, while this will be one of the toughest offenses Syracuse has had to face. The key to this game for the Bulls is getting out to an early lead and not letting up, and the key for Syracuse will be to halt the offensive outbursts that the Bulls have, led by none other than CJ Massinburg.

Broncos bury the Chips with a stellar running game

The Western Michigan Broncos absolutely dismantled the Central Michigan Chippewas 35-10 on their home field. The Broncos dominated on both sides of the ball, compiling 356 yards of offense and three turnovers on defense. While the Chippewas look forward to next season, the Broncos will try to stay undefeated in conference play for the rest of this 2018 campaign.

The Broncos Can Run

If you did not already know, the Western Michigan offense can RUN the ball. Against the Chippewas, quarterback Jon Wassink and company ran for 305 yards. Runningbacks LeVante Bellamy and Jamauri Bogan combined for over 240 yards, while Wassink scored three touchdowns on the ground. This is the third week in a row that the Broncos have scored three or more rushing touchdowns.

Defense, Defense, Defense

Western Michigan’s defense was not great at the beginning of the season, but as of late the Broncos have really started to turn it up. In their last three games, the Broncos have forced a total of nine turnovers. This defense is led by junior linebacker Alex Grace, who also leads the team in tackles with 59.

A Chip In The Offense

To say the least, the Central Michigan offense has been bad this season. In this game against the Broncos, the Chippewas had just 269 yards of offense and three turnovers. The only positive for the offense is that starting running back, Romello Ross had 11 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. The Chips are averaging just 17.1 points per game, which is last in the MAC.

Quarterback Help Needed In Mount Pleasant

The quarterback position has been abysmal since Cooper Rush left Central Michigan in 2016. Junior quarterback Tommy Lazzaro has been the main guy this season for the Chips after taking over for Tony Poljan in Week 3. However, Lazzaro has not been able to do much. Against the Broncos this week, Lazzaro was just 9/24 for 104 yards and two interceptions. Not to mention, the Colorado native had a QBR of 5.0 in the loss. Like the header says, quarterback help needed promptly in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

Looking Ahead

The Western Michigan Broncos are sitting pretty at 6-2 at the top of the MAC West. Luckily enough for the Broncos, they will not have to face the tough 7-1 Buffalo Bulls in the regular season. However, mark your calendars because Northern Illinois is coming into Kalamazoo November 20th. This game will most likely be a gritty battle to see who wins the MAC West. Central Michigan will try upset a team or two in their last four games of the season as they take on Akron, Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green, and Toledo.

Last but not least, is JUCO transfer Jeremy Harris from Greensboro, North Carolina. Harris averaged 15.4 points per game while shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc. These three will have to put a great game together to top a tough Arizona squad.

The Bulls will try to bounce back against the Broncos after their first conference loss

The Western Michigan Broncos (13-9) take on the Buffalo Bulls (16-6) after their first loss in 2018. The Bulls fell to Kent State earlier in the week 82-79 at the MAC Center. Western Michigan won their last game defeating Eastern Michigan in a commanding fashion 71-57. The Broncos are going to need another strong performance if they want to take down the top team in the MAC.

Players To Watch

CJ Massinburg, G, Buffalo - Massinburg went off for 20 the last time Buffalo faced Western Michigan. If Western Michigan is going to have any chance against the Bulls they are going to have keep Massinburg in check. The 6’3” guard had just eight points in Buffalo’s last outing against Kent State. However, Massinburg has been held under 10 points just one other time this season.

Nick Perkins, F, Buffalo - Other than averaging 16.3 points per game and scoring 18 points against the Broncos in their last meeting, Perkins is an outstanding rebounder. Western Michigan got out rebounded 43-35 in their last outing against Buffalo and Perkins had nine of those 43 rebounds. The 6’8”, 250 pound big man will be all over the glass in this showdown.

Thomas Wilder, G, Western Michigan - The Broncos success runs through the senior guard. Wilder had a whopping 40 points against Toledo earlier in the week and they still lost 85-81. The key in this game for the Broncos will be having players to compliment Wilder’s scoring. The Illinois native is a very streaky scorer, but when he gets hot, watch out.

Josh Davis, G, Western Michigan - Davis will be the battling on the glass with Buffalo’s Nick Perkins. Forward Brandon Johnson will have the duty of defending Perkins, meanwhile Davis will try to grab every board to give the edge to Western Michigan in the rebounding battle. Davis is a long guard that can have a very subtle, but large, impact in this game.

Prediction

Buffalo won their first matchup against Western Michigan 84-74, and I can see them grabbing their second victory against the Broncos on Friday night.
Players To Watch

Tre’Shaun Fletcher, G, Toledo - The captain of this offense. Fletcher is having a phenomenal 2018 campaign. As of right now, Fletcher is averaging 18.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game this season. The 6’7” guard has scored 20 or more points in his last two games and will look to do the same in his first matchup with the Cardinals.

Marreon Jackson, G, Toledo - The freshman guard out of Cleveland, Ohio has looked solid this year. Jackson holds the second best field goal percentage from beyond the arc in the MAC at 44.3%. Jackson can catch fire from three-point land as he made five triples in Toledo’s 85-81 over Western Michigan last week.

Taylor Persons, G, Ball State - Persons led his team in scoring last season and is bringing the same offensive power again in 2018. The 6’3” guard had a tough start to 2018, but he is starting to look like he is getting into a groove. Persons had 26 points in Ball State’s most recent win over Akron and had 19 points and seven assists in their overtime loss to Kent State last week.

Trey Moses, C, Ball State - These two teams matchup very equally on the glass. However, if Trey Moses can control the boards, they could slow down Toledo’s potent offense. Moses dominated the Zips last week with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The 245-pound big man will try to assert his dominance in the paint on Tuesday to end Toledo’s big win streak.

Prediction

Although the Rockets winning streak will end eventually, I do not see it ending against the Cardinals. Toledo has the second-best scoring offense in the MAC, along with a 41.2 field goal percentage from beyond the arc. Ball State has struggled to keep up with dominant offensive teams, and I do not see that changing on Tuesday night against Tre’Shaun Fletcher and the Rockets.

Our very own Ryan Sura checks in with one of the MAC’s best linebackers about the 2017 campaign thus far.

The Buffalo Bulls (3-2) are starting to get into a groove.

After winning their last two games, over Colgate and Florida Atlantic, it seems as if they are starting to roll. The Bulls defense has been solid, allowing just 19.8 points per game thus far. This is in big part thanks to the captain of their defense, Khalil Hodge.

I sat down with the middle linebacker for the second time this season. Hodge is excited for what is to come for the Bulls:

“We’re making strides,” Hodge said. “We haven't made huge accomplishments. But, last year was a rough year, so we are definitely headed in the right direction.

The Bulls defense has made some adjustments, and they’re slowly working. nd are manking a Buffalo is allowing 230.0 yards per game on the ground, which is not much of an improvement from 2016 where they allowed 253.2 rush yards per game, but after a lost season, there’s certainly optimism.

Defensive improvement can be best seen in the passing game, where the Bulls are currently 14th in the NCAA in passing defense with an average of 156 yards allowed per game, while only allowing two touchdowns.

“We’ve been in four really close games,” Hodge said. “In my opinion, that’s why you play football: to play exciting, close games. We just need to figure out a way to come out with the win.”

Hodge has been a bright spot on this defense. The six-foot-one, 235 lb. linebacker has 63 tackles through five games, which is good for third in the NCAA. Hodge cannot take full credit for his success because his teammates have been essential to his dominance.

“My teammates and coaches are always there supporting me, giving me advice,” Hodge said. “I have two veteran outside linebackers by my side that I work well with. But personally, my preparation is better this year. Whenever I see something that I can execute, I trust myself and go.”

Hodge is finally starting to get recognized by the NCAA as an elite linebacker. His speed allows him to pursue the ball carrier at a high level. However, Hodge knows there is more to be unlocked.

“It is nice to get some recognition. But, I’m not even close to finished. My goals have not been met just yet. I need to do more,” Hodge expressed. “I got my motivations mentally, I just need to keep pushing to achieve them.”

The veteran linebacker has seen progress in himself, but also a lot of defensive players. Hodge highlighted cornerback Tatum Slack who has been incredible to watch throughout the four games of the 2017 campaign.

“Tatum Slack has been great. He has something like seven pass breakups. He’s also a California guy, and I actually hosted him when he came to visit. So, it’s nice to see him succeed on the field and help the team win.”

Slack had six tackles, three pass deflections and one forced fumble in their most recent win against Florida Atlantic.

Khalil Hodge is headed in the right direction, and the Bulls right alongside him. The NCAA and fans should be excited to see what happens next for California native.

Ohio looks to hold top spot in the MAC East, while EMU looks to prove they’re a MAC West contender.

The Ohio Bobcats (2-1) come into Ypsilanti to take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles (2-0). The Eagles upset the Bobcats 27-20 in Ohio last season. Ohio will be looking for revenge on Saturday. The Bobcats are coming off a big win 42-30 against Kansas last Saturday. On the other side, the Eagles had a week off last week but won their Week 2 matchup against Rutgers 16-13.

The Bobcats have a new face at quarterback this year. Sophomore quarterback Nathan Rourke has taken charge of the Bobcats offense after previously splitting time with former starting quarterback Quinton Maxwell, who has taken over five snaps in all three games.

Rourke has been unbelievable in 2017. The 6’2” quarterback has 435 passing yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Not to mention, Rourke boasts a 162.1 quarterback rating. Rourke will look to throw the ball a little more on Saturday, considering the sophomore has only thrown the ball 49 times this year.

Eastern Michigan’s quarterback play has been solid as well. Senior Brogan Roback has thrown for 527 yards, one touchdown, and one interception thus far in the 2017 campaign. Roback helped the Eagles jumpstart their season with two wins against Charlotte and Rutgers. The latter of which was the program’s first win against a Power Five school in team history.

Other than solid quarterback play, Eastern Michigan’s defense has been extremely dominant. They are allowing just 10.0 points a game, and have allowed only two touchdowns in two games. This should change on Saturday considering Ohio’s offense is a drastic step up from their two prior opponents.

Ohio’s defense, on the other hand, has been struggling a little. In three games, the Bobcats are allowing 24.7 points per game. Ohio has allowed nine touchdowns, but have played better offensive units than Eastern Michigan. Ohio is sure missing edge rusher Tarell Basham right now. Basham was the MAC’s sack leader in 2016 and is now with the Indianapolis Colts.

Nathan Rourke will be without his top target Papi White, who is out with a hand injury for a few weeks. The rest of the offensive load will be on wide receiver Brendan Cope and running back A.J. Ouellette. Ouellette has been able to alleviate some of the pressure off of Nathan Rourke with some efficient running. The Ohio native has a 6.2 yards per carry average and has scored a touchdown in each of their last two games.

Eastern Michigan’s run game has been absent in 2017. Running back Shaq Vann has rushed for a mere 157 yards on 39 carries and no touchdowns. One player who has continued their offensive consistency this season is wide receiver Sergio Bailey II. Bailey had a big game against Rutgers, catching five passes for 107 yards.

Eastern Michigan will be put to the test this week against a tough Ohio squad. The Eagles look to continue their undefeated mark, while the Bobcats try to hold their top spot in the MAC East.

Toledo looks to upset the rusty Hurricanes

The Toledo Rockets (3-0) will waltz into Hard Rock Stadium to take on the #14 Miami Hurricanes (1-0) who have been off the last two weeks because of the inclement weather in Florida. The Rockets have been rolling, starting their season of with three straight wins. Their latest victory was in shootout with Tulsa 54-51. The Hurricanes hammered Bethune-Cookman 41-13 in their only game of 2017.

A Davey O’Brien Award candidate, Logan Woodside, has been phenomenal in 2017. Woodside has thrown for 1,004 yards, eight touchdowns and only one interception in Toledo’s three wins. Woodside’s lone interception of the season came against Tulsa last week. The senior quarterback has found great chemistry with senior wide receiver Cody Thompson. Thompson is fourth in the NCAA in receiving yards with 391 through three games. Miami will have to be in top form on Saturday to stop this dynamic duo.

Toledo’s defnese has been shaky, allowing 29.3 points per game so far. Even though Miami has not proven much this year by beating Bethune Cookman by 28, the Rockets will still need to bring their best efforts on the defensive end. Miami’s offense is led by quarterback Malik Rosier. This is the Alabama native’s first season as the starting quarterback, and his debut was impressive. Rosier threw for 217 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. A very efficient quarterback, with speed that is taken lightly by opponents. The Rockets will have to be ready for whatever the Hurricane offense and Rosier bring at them.

Rosier will have running back Mark Walton alongside him in the backfield on Saturday. Walton rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns in Miami’s only game of 2017, and is considered on of the best backs in the ACC. This does not bode well for the Rockets considering they gave up 423 yards on the ground last week against Tulsa.

The matchup between Walton and the Rockets starting running back, Terry Swanson, will be interesting to watch. Swanson has already found the end zone five times this season, and he will be looking to relieve some pressure off of Woodside’s arm in this contest.

There is not a whole lot of information on Miami’s defense this season. Allowing Bethune-Cookman to score 13 points does not really justify a good or bad defense. The Hurricanes defense will have to key in on stopping the air raid offense that Toledo has dominated teams with in 2017.
