While the rest of the conference and the fans of sports within it were gathering up their pitchforks, torches, and blazing hot takes for the Eastern Michigan football news, some other news was being made in Muncie, Indiana of the championship variety as the Ball State Cardinals women's tennis team claimed the regular season MAC Championship. It's newsworthy for several reasons, not the least of which is that it's a championship, but it's also the first women's tennis crown in program history for BSU.
It's yet another jewel in a stellar 2016 for the Cardinals, as their 20-3 record (7-1 MAC) is the best ledger in program history. Head Coach Max Norris becomes the first coach to crest the 20-win mark in women's tennis history in Muncie.
Said Norris, "Our team has been so unselfish this season and they've worked hard for something like this. As a program, this has been a long time coming. Obviously the previous players and the work from Christine Bresky got this program into the upper crest of the MAC. We're so proud to take another step forward and accomplish something like a regular season MAC Championship. We are excited for next weekend and thank you to all of our fans and support staff."
The Cardinals head to Oxford as the top seed for the conference tourney taking place April 29-May 1.
