Bonzi Wells signed by the Timberwolves

Perhaps this shortened season may be the Year Of The MAC after all! Legendary Ball State forward but perceived NBA bust Bonzi Wells is back in the league, signing with Minnesota. BonziBuddy's last sniff of the NBA was back in 2008 with the Hornets.

As someone pointed out in the Red and Black Attack comments, the big error in this NIU 2011 football video package is that they incorrectly listed Eastern Michigan as "Ball Sate" in their regular season finale. Other than that, it's got some wonderful production value and you can actually feel the momentum bursting with every additional MAC win after that puzzling CMU loss.

How the MLS might further make NCAA soccer irrelevant

+

It began with Akron's championship team sending a bunch of top picks to the MLS. But if the US league continues to develop youth teams, this'll really dampen the talent at the collegiate level. Interesting read, and one that may further marginalize a league already struggling for eyeballs.

Tim Beckman to Illinois?

All of the articles so far say that they're "zeroing in" on Beckman, but he has cancelled his post-practice presser today.

UMass football will enter MAC era with Notre Dame OC Charley Molnar

We'll try to remember all these details once they officially hit FBS/MAC status, but there's your new coach for the Minutemen. They fired Kevin Morris after this season. Molnar has plenty of MAC experience: Quarterback/wide receivers coach for Kent State from '94-2000, QB coach for Eastern Michigan in 2002, QB coach for WMU in '03-'04, then QB/WR coach for Central Michigan in 2006 (Dan LeFevour's freshman year). And he's followed Brian Kelly every step of the way, from CMU to Cincy to Notre Dame, going up the ranks.

A couple of the neat little highlights from last night's Kent State 71-51 win at James Madison. The dunker I believe was Patrick Jackson. The camera operator is on a smoke break.

So, Akron can offer Rob Ianello another job to avoid a buyout.

I love this. Akron hasn't necessarily "fired" their football coach, they simply decommissioned him from that particular job function. They can either buy out his contract or reassign him to another campus job. Rob Ianello, sociology professor. Make it happen.

More sound wisdom on firing coaches after two years

2

I've made my case on this. But the American Football Coaches Association director Grant Teaff (understandably defending their craft) has called the trend of firing coaches like Turner Gill and Rob Ianello "disturbing" after just two seasons, essentially getting one year of your own recruiting class playing time.
