2014 Toledo Football Recruiting: 3-Star QB Travis Smith Flips To Wake Forest

Recruiting in the MAC can really suck sometimes. Just ask Toledo head coach Matt Campbell who lost quarterback recruit Travis Smith to Wake Forest today.

The 3-star prospect flipped his commitment from Toledo to Wake Forest after visiting the Demon Deacons over the weekend. Smith, a Top-60 pro-style QB recruit, committed to Campbell and the Rockets back in June.

Losing smith drops Toledo down to 22 commits as of now, and none of those are quarterbacks. With Terrance Owens gone due to graduation, Smith factored into the future plans for Toledo at quarterback, and is a big loss to a recruiting class that has been building momentum over the past few weeks.

Losing recruits to other schools is tough, but especially when said school is now coached by the former head coach of your main rival. Dave Clawson signed on to be the Deacons head coach in December after winning the MAC Championship. Clawson's time in the MAC surely gave him some perspective on Smith, and moving to a BCS conference gave him a leg up on Campbell in the competition for Smith's services.

The Rockets are no strangers to flipping commits though. They recently flipped 2-star DT Ikeem Allen from rival Ball State, and last year flipped 3-star quarterback Michael Julian, a dual-threat QB Campbell from Boston College.

There are only nine days to go until signing day, so the odds of Campbell landing a replacement for Smith are unlikely.
