2014 Miami Football Recruiting: 2-Star RB Alonzo Smith Flips From FAU To RedHawks

Chuck Martin may have just found himself a running back diamond in the rough with 2-star Alonzo Smith.

Alonzo Smith took an official visit to Miami's campus over the weekend, and must have like what he saw, because a day after visiting Oxford, Ohio, the 2-star running back flipped his commitment from Florida Atlantic to the RedHawks.

Smith had committed to the Owls just four days before visiting Miami, but there were some doubts as to how solid his verbal to FAU was to begin with.

Smith was the Florida Class 7A State Championship game MVP after rushing for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns in in Dwyer High School's 55-39 win to wrap up an undefeated 15-0 season. Smith, a 5-11, 210-pound back's only offers came from Miami and FAU, with both coming recently. Not sure what the cause for concerns are with the 2-star RB, as stats are hard to find for him, and while there have been rumblings on Twitter, I can't confirm anything. But it appears if grades are not an issue this could just be a case of a player who burst on the scene in his senior year for one of Florida's better low-division schools and just didn't receive a lot of solid interest.

Smith possess solid size, a 4.5 40-yard-dash, and appears to have good vision on film.

It appears Smith wasn't just wooed by the pretty brick streets of Oxford, Ohio. Miami running backs coach Autry Denson is from Davie, Fla., about an hour south of where Smith resides in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla..

Smith gives the RedHawks 15 confirmed solid commitments for the 2014 class, and is the second running back in the class joining 3-star commit Paul Mosses. Chuck Martin has a lot of work to do to build up the 'Hawks last ranked (FBS) offense, and he's getting started by recruiting players that will fit his scheme, rather than trying to haul in as many 3-star recruits as possible. It's has led to his class being ranked the worst in the MAC at the time of this article, but as we've seen time and time again, it's about finding the guys who best fit your system in the MAC.

National Signing Day is set for Wednesday, Feb. 5, so until then Smith's commitment is not binding.
