While Akron may have been the butt of plenty of MAC Football jokes over the past few seasons, one thing Terry Bowden has been exceptional at is bringing in transfers, or JUCO players who can contribute to the team immediately. It paid off big time in 2013 when the Zips registered their best season since 2008. Well, Bowden did it again with picking up a commitment from 3-star JUCO offensive tackle Scott Boyett, according to 247Sports and Rivals.
The 6-7, 320-pound offensive tackle committed after visiting the Zips on Friday. He chose Akron over offers from Purdue, Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State among others, he was also receiving interest from the likes of Wisconsin, Boise State and the Miami Hurricanes. He has the size needed to play on a Division I offensive line, and is instantly the biggest combination of height and weight) offensive lineman Akron will have at it's disposal in 2014. His tall frame make him the perfect option at tackle
Boyett, a 2-star recruit who was rated as high as 3-stars by Rivals, spent the past two seasons playing at Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, Cali., and will has two years of eligibility remaining. He should be able to play right away at the start of the 2014 season.
Last season Akron's offensive line allowed 27 sacks, and was 11th in the MAC in rushing. A big body like Boyett could come n and help sure up some of the issues on the line for the running game, while also providing sophomore quarterback Kyle Pohl the protection he needs to succeed in Akron's spread attack.
Boyett's commitment give the Zips 10 confirmed commitments just two days before National Signing Day.
