The UMass Minutemen and new coach Mark Whipple are locking up the quarterback position for 2014 and they added another in the form of former Marshall QB Blake Frohnapfel. Frohnapfel, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound QB will have two years of eligibility remaining and will be able to play right away because he is on target to complete his degree in May.

He will certainly compete for the starting job the moment he steps on campus. Frohnapfel made an announcement on his twitter account.

After redshirting his freshman year, Frohnapfel was a backup the next two seasons and saw limited action. He threw for 386 yards and 5 scores during his Thundering Herd career. His best game came against East Carolina in 2012, when he entered the game after starting QB Rakeem Cato was injured in the second half. Frohnapfel threw for 101 yards on 12-15 passing while rushing for 62 yards.

With the addition of Frohnapfel, UMass has added four quarterbacks for the 2014 season. He should have an immediate impact and is the only quarterback with game experience besides A.J. Doyle.
