MAC Bats Roundup: Bowling Green and Miami Both Win in Sweeps

Central Michigan still leads the MAC, but only by the slimmest of margins.

Kent State Takes Home Series Over Buffalo

Game 1: Buffalo wins 6-0

Game 2: Kent State wins 8-4

Game 3: Kent State wins 7-4

Freshman sensation Eric Lauer was out-pitched by Kevin Hughes, who threw a complete game 2-hitter to start things off, but the offense would pick up for the Golden Flashes in the next two games to take the home series. Kent State now leads the MAC East, two and a half games over Buffalo.

The Akron pitching staff was just all-around awful this weekend. Way worse than normal. How bad was it, you ask? Entering the weekend, the pitching staff had an ERA of 2.82 with a WHIP of 1.268 in conference play. After having a weekend ERA and WHIP of 7.00 and 1.963, the new team totals are 3.66 and 1.410.

Scott Baker was really beat up in the first game, giving up 11 hits to the Broncos in less than five innings on the hill, but Weir's 14-strikeout performance and the Cardinals walking 12 times in the rubber match helped them take the series. Ball State now trails Central Michigan by a half game in the conference standings.

Central Michigan underperformed on the offensive side with a weekend batting average of .214 (21-for-98), but strong pitching performances against an underwhelming hitting club in Northern Illinois was all they needed to keep the best record in the MAC.
