As Toledo keeps winning, it's national recognition is on the rise. Tod Kowalczyk's boys are the talk of the town and find themselves garnering a lot of attention on the Mid-Major circuit.
In our sister site Mid-Major Madness's latest Top 15 Poll the Rockets checked in at No. 9, one spot up from a week ago. The lone Mid-American Conference team represented in the polls, Toledo's win over Cleveland State kept the team perfect on the season and just keeps building an impressive resume.
That same resume has the Rockets sitting at No. 3 in CollegeInsider.com's Mid-Major Top 25, up three spots from a week ago. Only Wichita State (which received all 31 first-place votes) and Harvard are ahead of the Rockets in that poll. Toledo's joined by three other MAC schools. Akron, on the heels of its big win over Oregon State (the poll is released on Monday's) jumped up four spots to No. 10. Kent State moved up two spots to No. 16 following a road win at the College of Charleston, and Ohio stayed put at No. 18 following a loss to UMass and a win on the road vs. Richmond.
In the big-boys polls—the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll—the Rockets got some love but have yet to crack the Top 25 of either. Toledo received 27 votes in the AP Poll, or the equivalent of coming in at No. 30. In the Coaches Poll the Rockets received 13 points, checking in at No. 31.
With non-conference play winding down the MAC has a few more chances to pad the resumes of its top teams, specifically Toledo. The Rockets play an unimpressive Coppin State Saturday, before heading on the road to take on the No. 16 Kansas Jayhawks next Monday to close out their non-conference schedule. A win over Kansas would surely shoot the Toledo into the national conversation.
