MAC Basketball Week In Review: Toledo stays hot, Miami (Ohio) is on the board

The football regular season is over, and depending on whether or not you care about bowls, it's time for basketball season to shine. Here is a look back at the 12 MAC teams (plus UMass) recent schedule, sorted by win-loss record, and some of the top performances.

Eastern Michigan is on a three-game losing streak, but that's what happens when good competition shows up.

Toledo 8-0 RPI: 56 BBState: 7
LAST WEEK
(W) Detroit, 95-71
(W) Robert Morris, 80-77
THIS WEEK
Saturday: vs. Sam Houston State
They're not going to stop winning until they face Kansas, and Rian Pearson isn't going to stop scoring for a while either. Maybe Toledo basketball can get into a bowl game instead?
Kent State 8-2 RPI: 141 BBState: 77
LAST WEEK
(W) Kennesaw State, 68-51
(L) Bucknell, 66-59
THIS WEEK
None
Surprise, surprise. Once again the Flashes look like a good, balanced team from their starting five all the way down. Get used to it. There's something in the water over there. In schedule terms, they have one more game before Christmas: December 21 at College of Charleston.
Ohio 6-2 RPI: 87 BBState: 72
LAST WEEK
(L) Oakland, 73-56
THIS WEEK
Saturday: vs Alabama A&M
You can throw out the books when OU plays OU. Especially in the O'Rena. In fact, Ohio may want to burn those books if they contained all known copies of the box score. Coming into that game, the Oakland Grizzlies were 1-7. OUch.
Buffalo 4-2 RPI: 220 BBState: 146
LAST WEEK
(W) Saint Bonaventure, 78-73
THIS WEEK
Wednesday: vs. Canisius
Javon McCrea has gotten nine field goal attempts in their last two games, and they've won both times. Everybody knows to guard him, and yet the Bulls can still post W's.
Central Michigan 6-3 RPI: 290 BBState: 171
LAST WEEK
(W) SIU Edwardsville, 65-64
THIS WEEK
Saturday: at Dayton
Chris Fowler had two go-ahead shots against SIUE in the final 24 seconds. Give the ball to him, I think.
Eastern Michigan 5-3 RPI: 122 BBState: 94
LAST WEEK
(L) Massachusetts, 69-57
(L) Purdue, 69-64
THIS WEEK
Tuesday: vs. Green Bay
It's uncanny what happens to a perfect record once a team starts playing, y'know, teams. But the Purdue game was a hell of an effort, and this is why nonconference records can be silly indicators. They'll be a tough victory on most nights.
Western Michigan 5-3 RPI: 238 BBState: 220
LAST WEEK
(L) Northwestern, 51-35
THIS WEEK
None
I'm not a smart man, but I know 35 points isn't very many. Nothing this calendar week, but their next match is next Sunday at Missouri.
Akron 2-2 RPI: 41 BBState: 111
LAST WEEK
(W) Cleveland State, 73-61
THIS WEEK
Saturday: vs. Bethune-Cookman
Doesn't it feel good to play actual basketball games? And you kids are good at it too. No more long layoffs for you.
Northern Illinois 3-4 RPI: 311 BBState: 310
LAST WEEK
(W) Dartmouth, 64-57
THIS WEEK
Saturday: at UMass (NBCSN)
It was the first, but perhaps not the last, basketball meeting between NIU and Dartmouth. Maybe they should play every year and make it some sort of oddball nonconference rivalry. The NIU-Dartmouth Sporting Challenge. (Oh, and sorry about the shattered BCS dreams, but it got in the way of my favorite football team's happiness.)
Bowling Green 3-5 RPI: 154 BBState: 178
LAST WEEK
(W) Western Kentucky, 74-62
(L) Xavier, 85-73 (OT)
THIS WEEK
Wednesday: vs. North Dakota
The Western Kentucky victory is probably the second-best victory by a Bowling Green athletic team last week. Probably.
Ball State 2-5 RPI: 236 BBState: 297
LAST WEEK
(L) Valparaiso, 69-50
THIS WEEK
None
In six D1 games, they've had five different high scorers: Chris Bond is the only one to do it twice. Call it balance, but they're having a hell of a time scoring points, so call it inconsistent nights for everyone. They're off until next Tuesday when they travel to Marquette.
Miami 1-5 RPI: 185 BBState: 262
LAST WEEK
(W) IPFW, 94-87
(L) Evansville, 78-65
THIS WEEK
None
Finally, a win! And it was against Mastodons. This must be now the first Cro-Magnon felt. A blank week leads into next Sunday when they host their upstate bros Wright State.
Massachusetts (Atlantic 10) 8-0 RPI: 1 BBState: 4
LAST WEEK
(W) @Eastern Michigan 69-57
(W) BYU, 105-96
THIS WEEK
Saturday: vs. NIU (NBCSN)
Please be kind to Northern Illinois. They didn't do anything to you. Unless you count this.
