After a brief hiatus, #MACsketball Power Rankings are back, and we’ve had some interesting developments over the past couple of weeks. We’ve had upsets, buzzer beaters, and great individual performances, so we shall see how these rankings hold up for the rest of the way.
#12 Bowling Green Falcons (7-9, 1-2 MAC)
(Average position: 11.33, Highest vote: 11, Lowest vote: 12)
Despite its two MAC losses, BG hung in with some tough teams in Akron and EMU while it got a big road win at Ball State. The Falcons host NIU and travel to Toledo for the Battle of I-75 in the coming days.
#11 Miami RedHawks (8-8, 1-2 MAC)
(Average position: 10.67, Highest vote: 9, Lowest vote: 12)
After stealing a win over the Huskies to open MAC play, Miami has struggled ever since with losses at Toledo and Ball State. It doesn’t get any easier for the ‘Hawks with meetings against Akron and the rematch with Northern Illinois.
#10 Western Michigan Broncos (5-10, 1-2 MAC)
(Average position: 10, Highest vote: 10, Lowest vote: 10)
Western snapped a skid with a huge home win over Toledo following crushing losses to Ohio and Akron. The Broncos continue to be tested next week with match-ups against Kent State and Eastern Michigan.
#9 Central Michigan Chippewas (10-6, 0-3 MAC)
(Average position: 9.33, Highest vote: 7, Lowest vote: 12)
The Fighting Marcus Keenes have had a tough go of it in league play as they have yet to win a MAC game. Going 0-5 in conference is a very real possibility with a home game against the Rockets and a road test vs. the Cardinals looming.
#8 Ball State Cardinals (10-6, 1-2 MAC)
(Average position: 7.67, Highest vote: 7, Lowest vote: 8)
BSU picked up its lone MAC win against a not-particularly-good Miami squad, so not much is certain about the Cards in 2017. The picture becomes clearer with contests versus Buffalo and Central Michigan in the coming days.
#7 Buffalo Bulls (8-8, 1-2 MAC)
(Average position: 6.67, Highest vote: 5, Lowest vote: 7)
After being destroyed by the Rockets in the MAC opener, the Bulls are back to playing good basketball as they are an Ohio desperation jumper away from being 2-1 in league play. Next week will be big for UB as it hosts BSU prior to traveling to take on a stout Kent State squad.
#6 Northern Illinois Huskies (10-6, 2-1 MAC)
(Average position: 6.33, Highest vote: 5, Lowest vote: 9)
NIU has rebounded nicely after a tough road loss at Miami to open MAC play with wins over the Chippewas and the Golden Flashes. There’s a chance that the Huskies can build some real momentum with a road game at Bowling Green as well as the return match with the RedHawks.
#5 Toledo Rockets (9-7, 2-1 MAC)
(Average position: 6, Highest vote: 6, Lowest vote: 6)
The Rockets have couple feathers in their cap already this season as the crushed Buffalo and Miami at home prior to stumbling on the road at WMU. UT will be tested this week with match-ups against CMU and BG.
#4 Kent State Golden Flashes (9-7, 1-2 MAC)
(Average position: 3.67, Highest vote: 3, Lowest vote: 4)
Between a rock and a hard place are the Flashes, who dropped two straight to Ohio and NIU despite scoring 100 on BSU in the MAC opener. KSU has a chance to rebound soon with games at WMU and at home against UB.
#3 Eastern Michigan Eagles (10-6, 2-1 MAC)
(Average position: 3.33, Highest vote: 3, Lowest vote: 4)
EMU was a handful of stops away vs. Buffalo from starting the MAC season 3-0, but the team is still in a very good spot at this juncture. A pivotal meeting at Ohio looms, and a rivalry game with Western is just around the corner.
#2 Ohio Bobcats (11-3, 3-0 MAC)
(Average position: 1.67, Highest vote: 1, Lowest vote: 2, First place votes: 1)
Kenny Kaminski kept the ‘Cats perfect in conference play against Buffalo as they are starting to come together at the right time. A home game with the Eagles is the only thing standing between Ohio and its monster clash with Akron in a critical MAC East match-up.
#1 Akron Zips (13-3, 3-0 MAC)
(Average position: 1.33, Highest vote: 1, Lowest vote: 2, First place votes: 2)
Akron is the hottest team in the MAC right now as it has won six straight games and 13 out of its last 15. The Zips just need to get past a road hurdle at Miami before taking on Ohio in one of the biggest games on the MAC calendar.
