We’ve got a huge #MACsketball tilt on Saturday afternoon as the Akron Zips (13-3, 3-0 MAC) hit the road to tip off against the Miami RedHawks (8-8, 1-2) in Oxford. The Zips have been on fire all season long with the play of Isaiah Johnson (16 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game), but Millett Hall has been a house of horrors for Akron as of late as the last time the team won in Oxford was in 2013.
Meanwhile, the RedHawks are in desperate need of a MAC win after dropping games against a pair of very good squads in Toledo and Ball State. The good news for the ‘Hawks is that some of the upperclassmen is starting to pick up their game as Logan McClane and Rod Mills have accounted for 31.7 points per game in league play while Michael Weathers has been solid at the point guard spot with 13.7 points per game, six assists per game, 2.7 boards per game, six steals, and a block in three MAC games.
On paper, it looks like a complete and total mismatch as Akron hauls in 36 rebounds per contest in MAC play while Miami has only mustered 25.7 per game. However, the Zips have been leaving a lot of points on the floor recently with a pitiful free throw shooting percentage of 65.6% in conference play. Also, the three-point shot has been a viable weapon for Miami at times, including 11 makes from downtown in its lone MAC win against Northern Illinois. This should be an intriguing game, which might be crucial for seeding in the MAC Tournament later on.
