Superman had kryptonite. Napoleon had his Waterloo. Jordan Spieth has the 12th hole at Augusta. And apparently, the 2016-17 Ball State Cardinals have the Bowling Green Falcons.
In a span of 14 days, the Falcons have now beat the Cardinals twice for their only two Mid-American Conference wins this season. Bowling Green beat Ball State on Saturday at home in the Stroh Center, 79-74. The Falcons are now 2-4 in the MAC and 8-12 overall. Ball State drops to 3-3 and 12-7.
Bowling Green’s Matt Fox hit a dagger three-pointer with just over a minute to go to give the Falcons a five point lead they would never surrender down the stretch. The Falcons led by as many as 15 points in the first half and held a 44-34 lead at halftime. The Cardinals made several runs at the Falcons in the second half and closed to within a point several times. But, Ball State could not get over the hump as the Falcons always seemed to have an answer when it looked like the Cardinals would take the lead.
Zach Denney would lead the Falcons with 17 points, and hit four big free throws with the game still in doubt and under a minute to play. Demajeo Wiggins would have a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Ismail Ali and Wes Alcegaire were the other two Falcons in double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively.
Ball State was led in scoring by Tayler Persons and Ryan Weber, who each scored 16. The Cardinals leading scorer this season, Franko House had just three points in the game, and fouled out with three minutes left.
The Falcons shot 41% for the game on 25 of 61 shooting. The Cardinals were 22 of 56 for 39%, including just 8 of 25 (32%) from three-point. The Falcons won the battle of the boards 45-37.
The Falcons will next play Tuesday at Central Michigan, while Ball State travels to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan the same night.
