Football coaches are always looking to add play makers to their roster. Mark Whipple, and UMass are no different. Just over a month ago the Minutemen were able to pick up a verbal commitment from one of the top running backs on the prep school level in Marquis Young of Milford Academy in New Berlin, New York.
Before ending his recruitment, Young, who stands 6'0, and 200 pounds, was receiving major interest from programs such as Albany, Holy Cross, Old Dominion, and Vilanova before deciding to suit up for Mark Whipple, and the Minutemen.
This season, Marquis has rushed for over 350 yards, and four touchdowns for 8-3 Milford Academy. Before he lined up for the Falcons, he was a standout player for Fairport Senior High School in Fairport, New York. As a senior, Young averaged 6.9 yards a carry on his way to 1,381 yards, and 12 touchdowns.
If there is one thing UMass needs it's players who have an eye for the endzone. Young definitely fits that roll. Even though his future could potentially be a bright one, Young might have to wait for his time to shine for the Minutemen.
UMass has a number of running backs returning to the roster next season, including team leaders Shadrach Abrokwah, and Lorenzo Woodley. With that being the case, Marquis could find himself redshirting during his first season on the college level.
