Akron has not been very active on the recruiting trail this summer. Up until this point, defensive tackle Tyler Shipman was their only verbal commitment. Last week Akron gained their second commitment for the 2015 recruiting class, athlete Jaquavis Dixon.
Dixon, a 6-foot-2 177 pound athlete, currently plays wide receiver, and free safety for Hagerty High School while playing quarterback in certain situations. There is no indication of what he will play for the Zips but it never hurts to have versatile guys like Dixon on a roster. Dixon has good speed and ideal height for both wide receiver and safety, so both are viable options for him in college.
In a recent interview with the Orlando Sentinel Dixon talked about his possible position in college.
"They are recruiting me as an athlete so it will just be however I fit once I get up there. I think I can get on the field early because I am determined and I am a hard worker. They said if I come in and work hard, anything is possible."
On offense, Dixon has shown the ability to be a reliable red zone target and also a guy who can execute a trick play or two. On defense, Dixon has some work to do on his technique but overall he is solid in coverage.
Dixon committed last week to coach Bowden and his staff after receiving an offer from them in May.
"He [Coach Bowden] made me feel very welcome and he said all of the right things to make me feel comfortable with the program."
Overall, the Zips seem to be getting an under the radar guy who could turn out to be a key piece to Akron's future and a star in the Mid-American Conference.
