When a new coach takes over a program, it is common to see a handful of de-commitments from the incoming recruiting class that has yet to sign. However with Desmond Phillips, the exact opposite happened. Phillips had previously committed to Toledo back in May, however had second thoughts and decided on Miami (FL) in November. Just a few week after Jason Candle was named the new head coach, Phillips decided to de-commit from Miami (FL) and ultimately re-commit to the Rockets.
Phillips chose the Rockets over reported offers from Temple, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, FIU, Kent State, Marshall, UMass, Miami (FL), Miami, Middle Tennessee State, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and USF.

Phillips played quarterback for Jackson high school in Miami, Florida, however look for him to play elsewhere in college. After watching his film wide receiver seems like a nice match to his skill set, however defensive back is also a possibility at the next level. On the offensive side of the ball, Phillips is a threat to score every time he touches the ball and will be exciting to watch in a Rockets uniform.
According to our recruiting database, Phillips is the 19th commitment of the class of 2016 for Toledo. Phillips is the second recruit to flip from a Power 5 program to the Rockets this week, the other being one-time Virginia pledge WR Neru N'Shaka. The Jason Candle era in Toledo is off to a hot start on the recruiting trail as he seems to be picking up right where his predecessor Matt Campbell left off.
