2016 Akron Football Recruiting: 3-star QB Kato Nelson commits to the Zips

Coach Bowden lands his first commitment for the class of 2016.

Akron is not known for making major splashes on the recruiting trail this early in the process, however that is exactly what they did on Saturday afternoon when 3-star quarterback Kato Nelson announced his commitment to the Zips.

Cincinnati was originally the perceived front runner for Nelson, however that seemed to change once QB Jake Sopko committed to the Bearcats. Shortly after this, the Zips wasted no time in offering Nelson a scholarship. After mulling his options over for a few days, the consensus 3-star quarterback ultimately decided on the Zips.

Nelson chose Akron over reported offers from Cincinnati and Temple. The 6-foot 175 pound quarterback is a huge get for coach Bowden and his staff as Nelson is a solid base to build this 2016 recruiting class on. Don't be surprised to see Nelson recruit some of his Florida friends to Akron. Historically, quarterbacks are known for helping recruit offensive firepower to their respective schools.

As far as talent, Nelson has boatloads of it. He possesses a big arm along with pretty solid running abilities. If there is one thing that Nelson needs to work on before getting to college, it would be his accuracy. With that said, Nelson is an intriguing prospect who possesses more than enough talent to play for a P5 program yet looks to have a bright future at Akron.
