2016 Toledo Football Recruiting: 2-star DL David Hood and 3-star ATH Desmond Phillips commit to the Rockets

The Rockets landed two recruits from the Sunshine State recently.

It was a rather busy Memorial Day weekend on the recruiting trail for coach Campbell and his staff. The Rockets landed two verbal commitments from 2016 recruits, ATH Desmond Phillips and DT David Hood. Both Phillips and Hood hail from the state of Florida, attending Jackson HS and Carol City HS respectively.

Shortly after Hood's commitment, we talked to him about why Toledo stood out to him.

"The defense they run, the attention they showed me, and I think it fits me."

He also has a list of goals that he would like to accomplish during his time at Toledo.

"All-Conference player, break the sacks record, and just be a dominant player while staying on top of my grades."

Hood chose the Rockets over reported offers from Florida A&M, Georgia Souther, and South Alabama. The 6-foot-1 265 pound defensive tackle displays an ability to shed block and quickly get to the quarterback. Look for Hood to be an impact player on the Rocket's defensive line for years to come.

When it comes to Desmond Phillips, the 5-foot-10 175 pound athlete is an explosive playmaker.

Phillips chose Toledo over a long list of reported offers from Bowling Green, Cincinnati, FIU, Kent State, Marshall, UMass, Miami, Middle Tennessee State, Pittsburgh, Samford, South Florida, Syracuse, and Temple.

The 3-star athlete plays quarterback in high school, however mostly is known for his running abilities. With his speed look for him to most likely play wide receiver, however defensive back is also a possibility at the next level. On the offensive side of the ball, Phillips is a threat to score every time he touches the ball and will be exciting to watch in a Rockets uniform.

Hustle Belt has reached out to Phillips to talk about his commitment and we will update this article accordingly if we hear back from him.

The addition of Hood and Phillips gives the Rockets their sixth and seventh commitments for the 2016 recruiting class. Thus far, their class is heavy with offensive players so look for them to start making a push on some of their top defensive targets over the next few weeks.
