The Eagles received a commitment from cornerback Jalen Phelps, according to his Twitter account. The Georgia product played his high school ball at Hillgrove High School in Powder Springs. The incoming senior reportedly held offers from Kent State and Georgia State before accepting an offer from Eastern Michigan. According to Rivals, Phelps is rated as a two-star prospect.
Phelps received first team all-state honors last season at Hillgrove High School. Phelps has an exceptional eye for anticipating plays and reading the quarterback. Phelps will be needed desperately for the Eagles as they only recorded six interceptions in 2014, which was ranked second worst in the MAC, ahead of only Buffalo who recorded two interceptions. The Eagles also were eleventh in the MAC in pass defense, by allowing 3,298 passing yards in 2014. Phelps will be an integral part of the Eagles' defense when he gets to Ypsilanti.
The southeastern United States continues to be the stomping grounds for MAC recruiting throughout most schools in the MAC, especially in Georgia and Florida. Expect this trend to continue throughout this year and in the future.
