The Miami RedHawks are starting to pick up some steam on the recruiting trail as Douglasville (GA) running back Tyre Shelton announced his commitment to the Red and White via Twitter on Sunday. The sixth addition to the 2018 class, Shelton apparently held no other offers per 247Sports.com.

Shelton may not be the most highly touted of recruits, but you can’t deny his ability or his productivity. During his junior season last year, he rushed for 1,017 yards and nine touchdowns on 125 carries while also making nine catches for 78 yards and a score. He is also excellent on his track team as he finished third at the Georgia state meet with a time of 10.85 seconds in the 100-meter. You can view his junior highlights below, courtesy of Hudl.
As you can see on his film, Shelton does a really good job of setting up his blocks and hitting another gear once he sees daylight. Adjusting to the speed of college defenses will be a challenge for him, but he makes quick enough decisions to where he should still be effective as a runner. His hands are a concern with how few receptions he has, and his frame (5’11”, 175 lbs) won’t allow him to be much of an inside runner right off the bat. Look for him to be redshirted, get a good year in the strength and conditioning program, and challenge for some playing time in 2019.
