According to multiple reports the UMass Minutemen have already found their new head coach in an old one. Mark Whipple, the man who famously won the Minutemen a Division I-AA (now the Football Championship system) National Championship, has reportedly agreed in principle to a deal to become the next head coach of the Minutemen. An announcement is expected in the coming days.
According to sources, Mark Whipple will be named next head football coach at UMass.

Early Friday it was reported that UMass would name the hire by next week, then hours after that report Twitter exploded with news that Whipple had been hired. Whipple, who previously coached the Minutemen from 1998-2003 and amassed a 49-26 record in Amherst, Mass., now has the task of cleaning up the disaster that currently is UMass Football.

In the wake of Charley Molnar's brief, but chaotic, reign as the Minutemen's head coach it appears UMass may have made a home-run-hire. Whipple knows how to win, and has done so with the Minutemen. Even capturing a national championship in his first year of his first stint on campus. The fans adore him, and most importantly he gets along with the alumni, something Molnar had trouble doing.
Now, a bit more on Whipple. After leaving UMass concluding the 2003 season, he took a position as the quarterbacks coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2004-2006, then took an offensive assistant position with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2007-2008. In 2009 Whipple returned to college as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach of the Miami Hurricanes under then head coach Randy Shannon. Most recently Whipple served as the Browns quarterback coach from 2011-2012, so he knows a thing or two about messes.
