Ball State will be vying to shake off last week's defeat to NIU and put themselves in a position to attempt to be bowl eligible in every year they've had Pete Lembo as the head coach. The Cardinals were sloppy in a 1-5 start, but have since rebounded to a 2-1 record which includes wins over Central Michigan and Akron. Freshman quarterback Jack Milas has had a big part in that turnaround, as he has lead the Cards to a 2-2 record after replacing Ozzie Mann five games in.
UMass has shaken off their struggles and late-game collapses in non-conference play to be sitting with a 2-3 MAC record that includes victories over EMU and Kent State. Quarterback Blake Frohnapfel has also put his team in several down-to-the-wire finishes, such as close losses to Bowling Green, Colorado, Vanderbilt, Toledo and Miami.
Ball State and UMass have not met up since the Minutemen joined the MAC, as the teams' only two meetings were in 1984 and 1988, which the two sides split.
