Phillip Ely Named Toledo Starting Quarterback for Week 1

After nearly nine months of a three-way quarterback battle, Toledo's Matt Campbell has declared a winner:

Phillip Ely is a redshirt junior, who transferred to Toledo from Alabama after the 2012 season, and sat out all of last season per NCAA rules. A fromer 3-star recruit out of Tampa, Ely was a backup for the Crimson tide during his two seasons in Tuscaloosa.

Ely beat out a pair of former 3-star quarterbacks for the job. Sophomore Logan Woodside saw some action last fall, and was deemed to be Ely's biggest competition for this year's job. Redshirt freshman Michael Jullian, who was a part of the same 2013 recruiting class that brought in Woodside, is the more athletic of the three, but was deemed by many to have the longest odds of winning the job, and was dealing with shoulder issues in the spring.
