After a disappointing, injury-plagued season in 2013, the Central Michigan Chippewas begin their quest for a MAC title tonight at 7 when they take on the Chattanooga Mocs in Kelly-Shorts Stadium. After slipping into a bowl game in 2012, injuries ravaged CMU in Week 1 with starting quarterback Cody Kater suffering a season-ending injury, and starting running back Zurlon Tipton suffering a busted ankle.
The Chippewas limped their way to a 6-6 record, but did go 5-3 in MAC play, finishing strong with three straight wins. They return the most starters in the FBS, with 19, including second-year starting quarterback Cooper Rush, and fourth-year starting wide receiver Titus Davis. Gone are Tipton and Shamari Benton, so tonight will be a good first look at the Chippewas running backs and linebackers against an opponent that CMU should have little problems with.
