If you thought that the Toledo Rockets would just continue to keep up with their dominating ways against Eastern Michigan at home, then you guessed correctly.
Picking up their sixth straight win of the year, the Rockets molly-whopped the Eagles with a 63-20 final.
The Eagles led 6-0 after a pair of field goals by Dylan Mulder, Reggie Bell's pass intended for Dustin Creel at the goal line was intercepted by Chaz Whittaker and brought back to midfield. The Rockets had an effective passing attack with an already threatening running attack with both Terry Swanson and Kareem Hunt rotating in the backfield. With the offense playing nearly flawless, the Rockets were able to score a touchdown on nine straight possessions.
One of those nine touchdowns was the result of a blocked field goal and returned for a score.
Another was set up by Swanson who had a 90-yard rush to set up a Hunt for the easy score.
Another one of those scores was from Cody Thompson, who caught a pass for about 30 yards, had a slick spin move to evade himself from the EMU cornerback and took it to the house to complete an 88-yard score.
For as much as the Toledo receivers have been recognized to drop a lot of easy passes, they didn't have that same sort of effect against EMU. Phillip Ely was able to complete 18 of 27 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns -- all to different receivers (Corey Jones, Michael Roberts, Thompson, Diontae Johnson).
Corey Jones was Ely's best weapon who caught seven passes for 90 yards with a simple 55-yard touchdown pass where he was wide open over the middle to start the third quarter. Alonzo Russell's streak of games with a reception extended to 44, hauling in three catches for 43 yards.
None of the three main running backs -- Swanson, Hunt and Damion Jones-Moore -- broke 100 yards rushing individually but collectively had 224 rushing yards on 22 handles. Swanson had 97 yards on four carries while Hunt and Jones-Moore had nine carries each.
Reggie Bell returned in action for the Eagles after sitting out with a jaw injury since the season opener, but had 121 passing yards on 26 attempts with no touchdowns and one interception. His main target was Cody Tuttle who had eight grabs for 60 yards.
Darius Jackson had his fourth multi-score game with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, picking up 113 yards on 18 carries.
The Rockets will play their first road game next week against Massachusetts while Eastern Michigan takes on Northern Illinois in DeKalb.
