The Toledo Rockets, playing on the road against an eight win St. Bonaventure Bonnies squad, trailed 55-45 with just over nine minutes remaining in the second half. Toledo then went on a game saving run to eventually take a one point lead, 60-59, with three minutes to go. The Bonnies fought back to tie things up at 62 apiece but a Janelle Reed-Lewis layup with 2.8 seconds left on the clock gave Toledo the big road victory.
With the freshmen coming up short (zero points in a combined 26 minutes), today's game was all about the upper class as they dominated the box score for the Rockets. Ana Capotosto returned from an ankle injury to score 16 points and grab 5 rebounds. Her point total was match by Reed-Lewis, who scored her 16th point at the most important time of the game. Brianna Jones scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds for the double-double. Andola Dortch contributed 13 points and Inma Zanoguera added in 6 points of her own.
Toledo shot well all game which is a pleasant turn around from recent games. The Rockets finished 45.6% from the field including 6-15 (40%) from the dreaded three point line. Capotosto led the way from long range going 3-4 on the day. The team did continue to shoot well from the foul line with an 85.7% performance.
For the Bonnies, Katie Healy led the way with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in 31 minutes. Gabrielle Richmond scored 17 points with 9 rebounds and Nyla Rueter added 10 points of her own. St. Bonaventure dominated down low with 44 points in the paint to Toledo's 28 and from the bench thanks to Toledo's goose egg from their freshmen class.
It's been a weird season for Toledo. Tricia Cullop's team has had its share of ups and downs thanks to injuries piling up and the pain of trying to integrate five new faces into the mix. Speaking of injuries, Stephanie Recker sat out the game as she is still nursing the back injury she suffered against Purdue. She appears to be out indefinitely.
The Rockets now return home for a game against Dayton on Sunday, December 22nd at 2:00 PM. They'll round out the calendar year on the road at Evansville on Monday, December 30th at 2:00 PM Central time.
