Maria Fantanarosa out as Miami women's basketball coach

Despite back-to-back WNIT appearances, Miami has relieved women's basketball coach Maria Fantanarosa of her duties. She went 237-212 over 15 years, with one NCAA appearance in 2008.

In a somewhat-shocking-but-also-not-really move, Miami fired women's basketball coach Maria Fantanarosa. Fantanarosa, whose name made me think of Brian Fantana literally every time I heard it, went 237-212 over her 15 years in charge, with only one championship and NCAA appearance in that time. The 1990 Miami alum had one year left on her contract, and athletic director David Sayler felt that he didn't want to have her coaching a "lame duck" year.

Still, it comes as a bit of a shock as the team appeared to be headed in the right direction. She had led the team to the WNIT in the past two seasons with a combined record of 40-23, when in the two seasons before that the team went 20-41.

But Sayler is now on the hunt for a new coach, and will be traveling to New Orleans this weekend to see the women's Final Four. He said he will be looking for a coach that can compete for a MAC championship every season.

For more, Rick Cassano of the Dayton Daily News has a great rundown of the decision.
