Mid-American Conference Eastern Division Player of The Week
Rachel Tecca, Akron Zips (Senior, Forward)
The week started off well enough for Rachel Tecca, as she scored 13 points and grabbed nine boards in an 80-56 road win against Ohio. She helped the staunch Zips' defense to limit Ohio to 56 points in the Convocation Center in Athens. Then in a 22-point victory over Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Tecca exploded for 43 points and 22 rebounds. The 43 points were a single-game scoring record for Akron. Tecca reached 2,000 points in the EMU game, becoming the first player in school history to do so. The 6'1 senior forward is averaging 22.9 points a game and grabbing 8.7 rebounds per game for the Zip.
Akron has a chance to improve their 4-3 conference mark with a Thursday matchup at Toledo, and with a home showdown with Buffalo on Sunday.
Mid-American Conference Western Division Player of The Week
Miracle Woods, Western Michigan Broncos (Sophomore, Forward)
She has done it! She has unseated the reigning champion! Even after multiple impressive performances by Crystal Bradford, Miracle Woods has outdone the star, in winning this week's POTW. In beating Miami (OH) in overtime, Woods put up 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, along with shooting an exemplary 15-16 on free throws. In a loss to Bradford's Chippewas, Woods kept the game from being a complete blowout by scoring 36 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Those 36 points were the most scored by a Broncos player in nearly seven years. The sophomore post player hit 12-16 free throws on the day. She also shot 12-19 from the field.
Woods and her team has two games this coming week as they travel to Muncie for a game with the Ball State Cardinals on Wednesday and then host Northern Illinois on Saturday.
Mid-American Conference Freshman of The Week
Cha Sweeney, Eastern Michigan (Freshman, Guard)
The 5'2 freshman wins the award for the second time with impressive performances against Bowling Green and Akron. In a 71-57 loss at Bowling Green on Thursday, Sweeney posted 18 points. In the aforementioned loss to Akron, Sweeney held her own against the Zips' defense, scoring 25 points and hitting four 3-pointers, a career-high for the freshman. In both losses, Sweeney at least tied for the team lead in points.
Sweeney and the Eagles take on Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant on Thursday, then host Miami (OH) on Sunday.
