MAC Baseball Alums: Ohio Bobcats

Or: a plea for a team to sign Gauntlett Eldemire.

Bobcats baseball could be the most storied in the MAC, both in the conference and in the pros. They certainly produced the best player in MAC history, and one of the best all time, in Mike Schmidt. Bob Brenly and Steve Swisher were also All-Stars, and Brenly went onto win a World Series as a manager. Frank Baumholtz was another decorated athlete who had a good baseball career in the 50s and 60s. But since 1989, they've had only one player in the big leagues, although they're close to a second.

RHP Adam Russell 2004, 6th rd Angels Triple-A Salt Lake City Bees Orioles Triple-A Norfolk Tides Russell has had a spotty career, bouncing from team to team and once being part of a trade package for Jake Peavy. After being released by Atlanta last summer he finished the season in the Angels organization and signed with Baltimore this offseason, making it his seventh organization in five years.
LF/1B Marc Krauss 2009, 2nd rd Astros Triple-A Oklahoma City RedHawks Same Krauss was traded last year from the Diamondbacks partly for Chris Johnson. He's played all over in his career, mostly corner infield and outfield. With the Astros they seem to be trying him at first base more than anything else. Now 25 years old, if he can demonstrate enough power at the Triple-A level he might get an MLB callup in a couple years.

Eldemire is only 23 but the Phillies released one of the best names in the minor league ranks during spring training. He hit just .227 with little power. I can't imagine this is the end of the road for him. Especially with that name. If baseball doesn't work out, he can license his name out to a MMORPG.

Update: Eldemire was signed by the Crushers last week. Thanks, Jacob.

RHP Seth Streich 2012, 6th rd A's Short Season-A Vermont Lake Monsters A's Class A Beloit Snappers Streich got an honorable mention in Sickels' list of top A's prospects. It looks like he needs to work on his control a little bit, but he's a decent power pitcher.
