Despite holding the top offense in the MAC to just 13 points in regulation, Western Michigan's poor kicking cost them a monumental victory over Toledo on a wet Saturday evening.

On a night went bobbled snaps and slick field conditions made it difficult for the offenses to get going, it was poor special teams play that provided the headlines from Saturday's game between the MAC favorite Toledo Rockets and upstart Western Michigan Broncos.

After Darius Phillips raced to the end zone following an Alonzo Russell touchdown on the drive prior, Andrew Haldeman lined up for the game-tying PAT to send the game to a second overtime. However, his kick would bang off the left upright and out, giving the Rockets a 20-19 victory.

The Broncos struck first, with a Jarvion Franklin two-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter. It would be the only score in an otherwise defensive half that saw both teams struggle to get the ball into opposing territory. The teams would trade short field goals in the third quarter to set up a wild 4th quarter.

The Rockets would strike first, with a Terry Swanson two-yard rushing touchdown to make it a 10-10 game. Then, both teams would go back and forth down the field but would yield no points. However, the Broncos would put together a solid drive before Haldeman would hit a 33-yarder to make it 13-10 with just 1:11 left in the game.

But Toledo would show their resiliency. First, Russell would make a big catch on 4th-and-6, gaining just enough yards to keep the Rockets' hopes alive. They would follow that up with a Corey Jones catch-and-run for 33 yards to put Toledo into field goal range. A few plays later, Jeremiah Detmer's 37-yard field goal sent the game to overtime, where the rest unfolded.

Swanson finished with 172 rushing yards and 54 receiving yards, but did have a key fumble that set up the go-ahead WMU drive in the 4th quarter. His quarterback, Logan Woodside, had a shaky game, going 13-for-27 for 210 yards and an interception. His lone touchdown was in overtime, however, so he did set up the game-winner. Jones finished with 104 yards on just 5 catches to lead all Rocket receivers.

On the other end, Jarvion Franklin was held in check yet again, going for just 66 yards, a season low. However, Zach Terrell showed great poise in the rain, going 30-for-37 for 370 yards, even catching a pass from Corey Davis for 18 yards early on. Terrell played most of the 2nd half with a bruised sternum as well, but found Davis (124 yards on 7 catches) and Phillips (121 yards on 10 catches) early and often.

Haldeman though will be the goat of the game. The junior kicker went 2-for-4 kicking on the night, missing a 29-yarder wide right and having a 27-yarder blocked due to a low trajectory. He also went 1-for-2 on PATs, with the miss costing the Broncos a shot at keeping the game alive for a win. However, P.J. Fleck was adamant that he was sticking with his guy despite his recent struggles.

The Broncos now head on the road to face Ball State next weekend while the Rockets prepare for a rare October non-conference game against Iowa State.

Chris Creighton announced that Rob Bolden will continue to start for EMU, but Bolden's performance today didn't inspire confidence. | Leon Halip

In the MAC opener for both teams, Akron reminded EMU that a program turnaround takes years, and EMU is only five games in.

Despite losing two of their last three games by ridiculous margins, EMU came into today's game with high hopes. After all, those games were against Michigan State and Florida, hardly typical of the level of play in the MAC. Makes sense, right?

For the first 30 minutes of today's game, that argument did hold up. EMU came out strong, scoring a touchdown on an 18-yard pass from Rob Bolden to Tyler Allen, while the Eagles' defense held Akron to short possessions with minimal gains. Even after Bolden threw an interception giving the Zips the ball starting in the red zone, the EMU defense managed to come up with a stop, limiting Akron to a field goal, and sending the teams to halftime with a close 10-6 margin. As an EMU fan, I felt pretty good about that, especially considering that Akron was favored by 26.

Unfortunately, a football game is (usually) 60 minutes long, and the second half proved disastrous for the Eagles.

EMU went three-and-out, four-and-out, and four-and-out. During that span in which EMU ran 11 offensive plays for 22 net yards, Akron gained 12 first downs, 234 yards, and touchdowns on three consecutive drives.

What had been a 10-6 game at halftime had, in the span of 15:05, turned into a 31-6 blowout. And in the fourth quarter, when they'd have liked to have mounted a comeback, EMU ended every drive with a turnover.

For Akron, Kyle Pohl was steady and efficient, completing 27 of 40 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns, plus a rushing touchdown. The EMU secondary gave the Akron receivers a ton of room, frequently playing seven to ten yards away, and Pohl took full advantage of the space, throwing behind his receivers for the safe catch. It didn't translate into many huge gains, but the Zips didn't need to look for big gains.

For the Eagles, on the other hand, Akron crammed the box to take away the running game, and it worked, with EMU averaging just 94 yards on 37 carries, a meager 2.5 yards per carry average. Bolden had a fair game, but not what they needed to offset the rushing struggles. Linebacker Tony Zappone came up big several times, but the EMU secondary turned in such a bad showing that there was just no getting over it.

As rough as today was, EMU fans only needed to look across the field to see reason to hope. Just two years ago, in his first season as Akron's head coach, Terry Bowden's Zips finished the year at 1-11. Now they're considered contenders for a division title. Ron English did not leave this program in good shape, but given time it can be fixed.

That doesn't mean we're going to have much fun in the meantime, though.

James Knapke and Ronnie Moore connect all game long and the Falcons remain undefeated in MAC play after a nail biter over the Bulls.

Buffalo and Bowling Green came into Saturday identical at 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAC. Both teams came in with a hot offense and cold defense. Nothing changed in week six.

James Knapke continues his 2014 campaign with a solid conference game. He dished out 321 yards on 39 attempts with a touchdown. His lone interception went through a receivers hands but he made up for it with 56 yards on the ground and his own touchdown.

Buffalo's Joe Licata finished with only 134 yards on 24 attempts and matched Knapke with a touchdown and interception.

Travis Greene and Fred Coppet combined for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

The first possession for the Buffalo Bulls was executed to perfection. Jeff Quinn's offense was able to control the tempo and took advantage of a battered Falcon defense. Joe Licata sneaked in on a fourth and goal to put Buffalo on the board. The drive went 75-yards on 15 plays in 9:24. The plan was to keep the Falcon Fast offense off the field and that's exactly what the Bulls did.

It didn't take long for Travis Greene and company to respond. Bowling Green sped 75-yards in just under three minutes capped off by Greene's four yard score. Greene was the centerpiece of the drive raking up 49 of the 75 total yards.

Everyone knew the Falcon defense isn't the same as last year. Well, Joe Licata falls into the ‘everyone' department. He was a perfect 7/7 going into his third drive and kept the streak alive. He took advantage of the depleted secondary drew a pass interference call after the big rush by Anthone Taylor. Licata followed it up with a 16-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulls a 14-10 lead.

The Falcons and Bulls went back and forth the next two possessions. James Knapke squeezed himself into the promise land from the 1-yard line to take back the lead, 17-14. Athone Taylor responded with a 8-yard scamper to give the Bulls a four point lead with 6:50 left in the second.

Apparently the Buffalo and Bowling Green ball boy's came to a mutual agreement after the back and forth touchdowns in the first half. They decided to grease up the pigskins to slow down play in order for them to catch their breath. Yeah, lets go with that.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ronnie Moore fumbled and Buffalo recovered on the Bowling Green 21. Licata was a perfect 9/9 until his pass was intercepted by Gabe Martin on the 2-yard line and returned to the Bowling Green 39. It then took three plays for the Bulls to get it back. Brandon Crawford forced a fumble on the sack and Nick Gilbo recovered the ball for Buffalo.

Athone Taylor decided to stop the turnover carousel and carried the ball six times for 26-yards and punched in a touchdown to extend the lead 28-17.

The Falcons went into the half down by eight after the dependable Tyler Tate made his second field goal of the game.

The second half started quick . The Falcons cut the lead to a single point after Ronnie Moore extended ball over the pylon for a 9-yard touchdown reception. Moore finished the game with 178 yards on 9 receptions and a touchdown. It took Dino's crew 1:26 to start of the third quarter, #FalconFast. After a three and out by the Bulls, Bowling Green took it into the redzone and Mr. Dependable Tate gave them the lead on his third field goal of the game.

Following a blocked field goal, Buffalo's Aathone Taylor took in his third touchdown from the 12-yard line to take back the lead 35-30 with 8:35 left in the game. Taylor finished with an impressive 219 yards on 36 carries.

The thought-to-be dagger in the chest came with a little over five minutes left in the fourth. Buffalo was facing a third and thirteen in Falcon territory when Anthone Taylor rushed the ball for an easy first down. Dino Babers spoke earlier in the week defending his defense after they gave up record numbers to an average at best UMass offense. Buffalo failed to go up by eight after a missed 33-yard field goal.

With the huge defensive stop, the offense recharged itself and bolted 80-yards down the field in four plays and finished on a Fred Coppet touchdown run. Being up 36-35, Babers offense went for the two point conversion but failed.

The game came down to Buffalo at the Bowling Green 48-yard line, fourth and eight with 1:35 to go. Licata threw into triple coverage where the ball was deflected by a defender and fell to the ground.

The Bowling Green offense milked the rest of the clock on the back on Travis Greene who came through in the clutch all game.

The Falcons now stand at 4-2 (2-0 MAC) and head to Athens next week to take on Ohio University. The Bulls fall to 3-3 (1-1 MAC) and are also on the road next week against Eastern Michigan.

For the first time since 2012, Miami won a football game.

The last time the Miami RedHawks (then known as the Redsk- oh, wait, it wasn't that long ago, my bad) won a football game, it was against a rivaled Ohio Bobcats team, who was ranked #23 in the nation at that point. That was 21 games ago. That was the longest losing streak in the FBS.

Coming into this one, Miami and the Massachusetts Minutemen were both 0-5. Miami hasn't been able to figure things out all year and UMass hasn't been able to play a complete game all year long.

The First Half of the Football Game

The first half of this game was really exciting for anybody. Lots of offense went into this one, especially from the two quarterbacks that most fans didn't know too much about before the season: Blake Frohnapfel and Andrew Hendrix. Those two kept slinging the ball all over the place in the first half. Both playing at high intensities, combined for 511 passing yards through the air.

But really, UMass was just rolling. They were up 14-0 after the first quarter and put up 41 points by halftime with an ever so comfortable 20-point lead. Even if Miami were to catch up to 41, there's still too much time on the clock for UMass not to score some insurance points.

The Third Quarter of the Football Game

For a couple of teams that allow over 30 points per game, it's easy to expect more of the same from these teams. But Miami held UMass to a couple of punts and a turnover on downs, while Hendrix, without a strong running game to move the ball downfield, did what he could, completing seven of his 15 attempted passes in his team's two drives. Miami would score towards the end of the this quarter after a 3-yard run by Jared Murphy.

Weird Football Happenings

Because if you're watching a game with these two football games involved, you're going to have Weird Football Happenings.

Before we go on, I just want to give you a spoiler alert and say that, up to this point, the kickers for both teams have yet to attempt a field goal, and there just wouldn't be any field goals in this contest. Bad things happen when MAC kickers go out onto the field and try to kick field goals.

I wouldn't do it, either.

In the fourth quarter, Frohnapfel just looked... different. I hate using ellipses, but he really did seem off. He wasn't hitting his receivers as well as he was doing earlier in the game. The first drive of the fourth quarter, the MInutemen were in RedHawk territory, but a holding call took back a big run play from Shadrach Abrokwah, which would've given them a touchdown. Instead of firing back, Frohnapfel overthrew Tajae Sharpe on a 4th-and-22 to give Miami the ball back.

A few possessions later, Miami found themselves in the same position, starting on the UMass 41-yard line. While the wheels stopped turning for Mark Whipple's Minutemen, Hendrix hooked up with Sam Martin for a 16-yard score, giving all of the Miami fans hope, still down 41-35.

UMass

If UMass is going out with a loss, they're doing it on their own terms.

The very next drive for UMass ended after three plays. Abrokwah just picked up a first down on a 2nd-and-6, but coughed up the ball to Miami's Jarrell Jones.

They were up by 20 at the half.

Hendrix completes three straight passes for 44 yards, then ended the drive on a 1-yard touchdown run to tie it up. The PAT was good, and the RedHawks led by one at this point.

UMass: Part Two

You didn't think UMass would stop UMassing there, would you?

There's 1:13 left on the clock. Frohnapfel, after three incompletions, moves the chains on a fourth down. Here's what ESPN's play-by-play says what happened three plays later:

Frohnapfel, B. pass intercepted by KERN, Kent at the UMASS43, KERN, Kent return to the UMASS43, PENALTY MU pass interference (ROLLINS, Q.) 12 yards to the UMASS43, 1ST DOWN UMASS, NO PLAY. for a 1ST down

Okay, let's try UMassing again.

UMass: Part Two, Take Two

Something happens.

Blake drives for the last few seconds of the game. They get all the way to the 4-yard line. They can't call a timeout, they can only spike it and send out the field goal unit. The only problem with that is that sounds like a terrible idea and I already told you that wouldn't be happening.

The ball is snapped with less than five seconds left. Frohnapfel looks to his right, hits Abrokwah near the sideline, who his hit just short of the goal line as the clock expires. Blake Frohnapfel did not spike the ball.

CMU's biggest stars had monster games as the Chippewas defeated a sluggish and anemic Bobcat team.

Central Michigan's biggest stars shined the brightest in a one-sided victory over the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at Kelly/Shorts stadium Saturday afternoon in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. CMU's homecoming crowd was treated to the Titus Davis and Thomas Rawls show. Each player put up huge numbers as he Chippewas dominated the Bobcats.

Thomas Rawls led CMU's rushing attack with 211 yards on 37 carries for two touchdowns. His one yard run halfway through the fourth quarter iced the game for CMU. The score answered Ohio's only drive of the game and pulled CMU away 28-10.

For Titus Davis, there were two touchdown receptions, ten receptions and 181 yards receiving. Davis' second touchdown catch was the biggest play of the game. It came late in the second quarter on a beautiful route that resulted in a 32 yard score that gave CMU a 14-0 lead. It was a lead that was never challenged by Ohio.

Ohio started sophomore JD Sprague. At times, Sprague looked outmatched by the CMU defense. Sprague finished with 7 completions on 21 attempts. His performance was worse than his anemic numbers suggest. The story for Ohio was that it's offense just could not get going.

A potential big play for the Ohio defense was overturned by a video review. With CMU marching, quarterback Cooper Rush launched a duck into the corner of the Ohio end zone in an attempt to get rid of the ball due to the Bobcat pass rush. In real time, it looked like the ball was picked off by an Ohio defender. The officials reviewed the play and overturned the call on the field as it appeared that the ball was on the ground simultaneous with the grab by the Ohio defensive back. This turned out to be very bad luck for the Bobcats as Thomas Rawls scampered around his left end for a 15 yard touchdown on the next play.

Each team now has a 1-1 record in MAC play. CMU gets the pleasure of traveling to DeKalb next week for a visit in Huskie Nation. Ohio gets Bowling Green at home.

The Cardinals just cannot seem to break their losing streak. Ball State was able to take care of the Black Knights in the previous season, but they weren't able to get the job done this time, falling to them 33-24.

Well, it looks like the Cardinals couldn't break their losing streak. This is now four in a row that they lost. They have already lost more games this year than they lost all of last season. At this point, it's hard for Ball State fans to be optimistic. The Cardinals fell to Army 33-24. It's a hard game for Cardinal fans to swallow, due to the fact that Ball State easily handled Army last season.

The biggest downfall for Ball State in this game was their inability to convert on 3rd down. They were 1 for 8 on the game. It's hard to compete when you can never convert on 3rd down. Army had much more success, being 9 for 15 on the night. Penalties also played a big factor on the game. Army was able to limit themselves to one penalty for 15 yards. The Cardinals, unfortunately, were not so disciplined. They had 4 penalties for 36 yards.

Ball State was not able to stop Army on the ground whatsoever. Running back Larry Dixon had 188 yards on 28 carries. Angel Santiago, Army's quarterback, was also able to pick up 89 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts. It was surprising that Ball State linebackers did not step up more to stop this run game. Having running backs average 6.2 yards per carry is inexcusable, especially for the caliber linebackers that Ball State has. Ball State's defense as a whole was not top notch, besides the one fumble recovery, they didn't do anything spectacular Army's running attack was pretty much their whole offense. Through the air, Army only had 48 yards. If the Cardinals were able to contain the run more, we could have had a completely different outcome.

One of the two receptions that Army completed was for 37 yards to Edgar Poe. The other was to Raymond Maples for 11 yards. It is evident that Army is not a pass heavy team. They weren't in any pressure to throw the ball down field, as they were leading the whole game.

The Cardinals trailed the whole game. These are games where Ball State quarterback, Ozzie Mann, needs to step up. Mann really hasn't done anything impressive all year. He was 18 for 26, throwing for one touchdown and one interception. It isn't terrible, but Mann really needs to step up in games that the Cardinals trail. It's really no secret that Ball State's passing game is lacking as a whole. The only other touchdown that Ball State was able to pick up was a reception to tight end Dylan Curry. It was his only reception of the night for six yards. With Jordan Edwards having injury issues, another receiver needs to step up. The only receiver that we have seen step up is KeVonn Mabon, but he isn't nearly putting up Jordan Edwards type numbers. Ball State needs to have multiple receivers step up. This is an area the Cardinals will need to improve on if they want any chance of being ahead of the MAC West.

The one thing for Cardinal fans to be optimistic about was the fact that Jahwan Edwards still able to have a solid game. He had a 56-yard touchdown run that was able to keep Ball State in the game. He was able to get 2 of the three Cardinal touchdowns. However, he only had 12 carries on the night, gaining 142 yards. Not only was he the top rusher, he was also the top receiver. He had 5 catches for 44 yards. It looks like Edwards is the biggest key player for Ball State's offense.

The loss today was obviously another devastating one. While bowl chances are still a possibility, it looks like there is much less of a chance. They only way I can see Ball State making a bowl game is if they win pretty much every game for the rest of the year. Realistically, I don't see this happening. I don't even see Ball State as a .500 team this year. Hopefully they will be able to pick up a win against Western Michigan next week at home. Picking up a win my trigger some momentum and steer this team in the right direction.
